Duties
This position is located under the Office of the Director, located in Washington, District of Columbia.
The primary purpose of this position is to support the mission of the Office of the Director as the expert authority on questions of ATF history and historical methodology for all of ATF.
As Historian, GS-0170-13, typical work assignments may include:
Plan and develop an Agency wide historical program that provides ATF history documentation.
Analyze historical events considered to effect combined joint operations.
Conduct independent research and prepare authoritative oral and written information concerning ATF and its history.
Provide presentations on ATF history and how it relates to American history and Government.
Function as ATF liaison at Law Enforcement history and archives conferences, meetings with authors, journalists, other government agencies, the public, and for ATF employees conducting research.
Determine scope of research and nature of material to be prepared and conduct necessary research.

This is a non-bargaining unit position.
MOBILITY PLAN: New employees hired pursuant to this vacancy announcement must sign a mobility agreement. The purpose of ATF's mobility policy is to enhance career development and progression, and achieve mission and business effectiveness. To accomplish these objectives, the mobility plan will facilitate the movement of employees through special short-term assignments or permanent reassignments throughout the Bureau. Applicants who decline to sign a mobility agreement, as required, will be removed from the hiring process.
Key Requirements:

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
A. Bachelor's Degree (or Higher Degree): history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history; OR
B. A Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Evaluation of Graduate Education Graduate study in the social sciences or humanities may also be credited when such study included training in historical research methodology; or the thesis approached the subject from an historical viewpoint and used professional historical research methodology and techniques in its preparation.
To qualify for the GS-0170-13, candidates must also have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-12.
Specialized experience is demonstrated experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience must be in the normal line of progression or must be related to the work of the position advertised and must be reflected in resume.
Specialized experience includes:
Proficient in history and archive best practices, procedures, and methodologies; AND
Adept in oral history techniques, equipment, and the relevant legal, ethical, and archival principles providing counsel and or information; AND
Review and research historical aspects of a program, utilizing different methodologies, to present information in a variety of ways.
